A very rainy summit surrounded by clouds. The sun peaked out for a brief moment as I sat near the summit eating my lunch. Took Crawford Path both ways. Was a stream on the way down! 2/48

Winter snow shoe accent
Climbed this in snow shoes after a few inches of snowfall. Trail was fine with minimum wind exposure until last 5 minutes / 100 feet.
Last one of the day on the way back from Mt Washington. Getting kinda warm by this time of day

First summit of the day on my way north to Monroe. A nice, quick detour from Crawford Path, with some brilliant views north and east.

Short hike but a tough day
I missed this peak on my Presidential Traverse in 2012 so I came back for it. The plan was to get Jackson and Webster too but after postholing for hours I was inclined to come back for the other two in the summer. Another hiker I ran into on the way down said it took him two hours to go from the summit of Jackson to the Mitzpah hut. Hard work.
Pitched tent near Mizpah Hut and climbed Pierce and Eisenhower with Chris in relatively poor winter conditions.

Cool hike, stopped at Mizpah hut and enjoy the blueberry cake. Had to dash back to avoid a storm.

I learned something...
This was my first winter hike in the Whites. The plan was to camp atop Mt. Pierce and then hit Eisenhower, Monroe, and Mount Washington the following day.
My solo camping experience atop Mt. Pierce was amazing. But, that was to be the highlight of the trip.
My canister stove died in the sub-zero temps so I had little water. I lost my balaclava somewhere in my pack. This left my face freezing in the high, cold wind. Most of all though, I didn't have any snowshoes or crampons. I was post-holing up to my crotch every other step. At one point I slipped into a snow-drift so deep than I was literally up to my neck in it. It took several frigid minutes trying to dig myself out.
Needless to say, I simply wasn't prepared to make it over to Eisenhower and beyond. I intend to buy some snow-shoes and a liquid fuel stove before I try such a trip again.
Beautiful place though, despite the failure! I'll try and post to photos soon.

Part of a north-to-south presi traverse dayhike, Madison to Webster. Great conditions until just before the Mizpah hut, at which point there was some lightning and hail.

Up Eisenhower and over Pierce day 1. Camped at Nauman, and headed to Jackson the next day... though a bear made us change course and head down Crawford!

Windy out of the trees, but clear skies and a gray jay for company on top. Went on to Eisenhower after.

Nice views up top... not nearly as cold as other 4,000 footers have been this winter!
