This was a nice hike in some snow as a diversion on a drive from Pasadena to the Bay. I started from the Nordic Station at the end of the road, and continued to Sawmill.

From the Nordic Center
Hiked along with Sawmill & Grouse. Temps ranged from the 30's to 50's in MAY! Very windy and still lots of snow going down/up the switchbacks from Pinos to Sawmill. Very nice hike!

Pinos & Sawmill
Hiked the Vincent Tumamait trail from the Cerro Noreste rd.
Great clear day low to mid 60's, trail condition was excelent (no snow). The rock tower on Sawmill pk. was very cool.

Road
An out and back trip including Mt. Pinos, Sawmill Mtn., Grouse Mtn., and Cerro Noroeste. Surprisingly cold and windy day with some snow flurries starting around noon. Probably the coldest day I have hiked on this year - in May!
Hiked this one with the kids and my Dad. I was going to head over to Sawmill to get the county high point but I ran out of time. Suprising amount of snow still. Approx 3 feet.

Cross Country ski to the summit
Ever since moving to Southern California from Seattle, I have been searching for a place to ski. I arrived at the parking lot at 9:00 and headed up the trail. I was with a new cross country skier, so our progress was a little slow, but we made it to the large meadow near the summit by 10:15. The meadow area is a great place to go off the main trail, but still have a large almost flat area to ski in with few trees or other obstacles. After a short rest, we skiied up and down a small hill to another flat spot, and then up one last hill to the summit with the antenna complex. After a lunch break and some playing in the snow, we coasted down to the parking lot and were home in Los Angeles by 2:30.
I was surprised at how much snow there was on Mt. Pinos, but with altitudes from 8,300 to 8,800 feet, the trails were completely covered, with a three to four foot base at the large meadow near the summit.
Be sure to arrive early, the parking lot was almost empty at 9:00 am, but when I got back to the car at 1:15, it was jam packed with people and there were cars double parked all over the place. To be sure you can get out on a crowded day, park on the left side as you enter, so you have an easy escape route.
It looks like there are several hiking trails here too, and I will be sure to come back for more winter and summer trips.

fairly uneventful
Did this with Lara. Left TH (i.e. parking lot) @ 15.00. Perfectly clear (beautiful!), but cold & windy. With pines & dry grasses, reminded me a lot of Colorado. Met Matt Worster en route- had sent him an email with beta about Snow Mountain just a week or 2 before, halfway to summit. Summited @ 15.46. Left ~10 min. later- I kept going to Sawmill Peak (Kern County), w/ Lara turning around because she was too cold.

With Sawmill
Watched a truck commercial being filmed on the road below the trailhead. Water trucks wetting the road and I've never seen so many people constantly polishing a vehicle that supposedly looks rugged.
