NE Couloir
9.5h r/t from camp at Baboon Lakes with the 239 Club: Rahil, Reza and Peter. This was 5 years after we failed in '15 due to deep soft snow. Good, firm snow after a dry winter (only 3" in May).

Great skiing on 06-22-2019
Climbed the NE Couloir to ski it and hiked up to the summit for the view. Skiing was excellent.

Skied form the notch on the west ridge.
Skinned and booted the north face to the notch on the west ridge and climbed from there to the summit (in ski boots). Solid class 4 to the summit. Skied the north face to Echo Lake on perfect spring corn.

Powell and Wesley
NE couloir totally melted out as should be expected so late. Tried to climb the south side of the ridge from Thompson-Powell col, as the rock looked really nice and I thought I could see a general line up. Didn't pay enough attention to Secor to know there's supposed to be a class 3 route on it, so when I hit a couple hard for me boulder problems 90% of the way up and not seeing obvious alternatives, I wimped out, downclimbed and took the easy route across the rubble along the bottom of the solid ridge. That defeat and the time sunk into it lead me to also wimp out on the traverse to John. Beautiful day though with about as fine of views of cloud dappled Sierra ruggedness that one could ask for.

Perfect NE Couloir
Good firm snow to the top, thanks to 2 days of cold temps and wind. Summited Powell and Wesley, gotta leave John for another day considering the amount of snow and wind that I would have to contend with. Awesome day out there all by myself!

All Three
Up the NE Couloir to Point Powell and then over to Point Wesley and Point John. Couloir was just barely in perfect condition for my short aluminum crampons and small ice ax. Enjoyed the ridge over to Point John, had to do it twice to get back to Mount Thompson in the afternoon.

Point Powell via NE chute
Made it up chute on day 7 of SC2010. Used ice axe, crampons, and trekking pole on steep snow. Above snow was loose dirt and rock, but I made it to plateau summit. Long day (15 hours)making it back to car (Sabrina Lake Trailhead) at 9PM. Forgot to apply sunscreen, so ended up with sunburned face.

Traverse across all 3 points
See Bob's post. Lots of fun with Bob and Matthew. The longest/steepest snow field I had climbed at that point. Not as bad as I thought.

Pts. John, Wesley, and Powell
Climbed the NE Couloir on Pt. Powell, strolled over to Pt. Wesley, then traversed along an enjoyable class 3 ridge to Mt. Powell with Bob and Glenn. Descended to Echo Lake and back through some beautiful country to Lake Sabrina. My last day of the '06 Sierra Challenge, as I had to return to China for work for a couple of weeks. Bummer. :-(

Yes Mark, you missed out on a good one. Turns out the traverse from Pt. Wesley to Pt. John was the best scrambling all day, and some of the finest on the 2006 Challenge. Trip Report

Sierra Challenge 2006
Climbed this peak on the 3rd day of the Sierra Challenge. Ascended via the NE Couloir (fun) and descended the SE Face (sucked) after tagging Pt Wesley. Apparently Bob Burd found a fun class 3 traverse to Mount Powell and I'm kicking myself for not following him!
