airy summit ridge
short day but some truly horrible scree to get to the col. I would wear a helmet for this one- significant rockfall danger if there are people above you. The final section up the ridge is easy but definitely exposed. I did a bit of au cheval along the ridge.

scramble route
Foggy and cloudy, but still. Great atmosphere on summit ridge with low vis. Ascent with R. Leighton.

Scramble route
Very short approach, only about 15 minutes in the forest. Steep dirt to ridgeline. Loose stuff on NW face. Great knife-edge ridge last 100 feet to summit. Great view of K' country and its 11,000 footers. View of vertical tilted bedrock in this area is crazy! Under 5 hours round trip.

Rae Via Ptarmigan Cirque and South Ridges
I had the mountain to myself, as I encountered no one past the Ptarmigan Cirque trail. From the col, I could see a large group far below approaching Rae Glacier through the moraine. Kept well below the final ridge until steeper terrain and cliffs forced me to move up to the edge. Began the scramble at 1 p.m., gained the summit at 5 p.m., back at the car at 8 p.m.
Route Climbed: Scramble from Ptarmigan Cirque Date Climbed: July 27, 1996
A bear warning at the trailhead slowed my approach to the cirque but no bear spotted. The gully to the col was completely full of snow so I scrambled up the rotting cliff bands to the right. The glissade down the gully from the col was a blast.

We had absolutely CRAPPY weather the whole time. If the route wasn't so straight forward, there is no doubt that we would not have been able to find our way. With continual poor visibility, rain and snow, it was a challenging scrambling. It took us 9 hours car to car. There was a register at the top that we signed. All we got for a view was the inside of a cloud. It was a great scramble though.
Route Climbed: Northeast Ridge Date Climbed: August, 2004
I was looking for a little exercise before spending a climbing week back in the Fryatt Valley. This was a perfect outing for such. This scramble was on the easy side of moderate. The guide book time of 5-9 hours seems a bit long. I did the round trip in 3 hours. I did eat my Wheaties this particular morning however. I would like to ski the Rae Glacier this coming winter, let me know if interested. Cheers!
