It was a mostly cloudy day, and I went as fast as possible because of the possibility of PM thunderstorms (none came). Beautiful open scenery (until you reach the top) - it was like a reverse tree line. Nice people on the trail, too.

Great HP in Virginia #30
Love this one! First cool, then rain, then sunny and hot. The trail was nice and varied, at times rugged & at times smooth. The ponies were sweet; the rhododendron were bright and smelled like peaches; the bee buzz was soothing. The only blemish was the actual HP. Two identical markers on two different rocks. Huh?

20th state highpoint
Beautiful warm day. Hiked up the Appalachian trail and back from Elk Garden Trailhead. Several people on the trail but I had the top to myself. 3.5 hours round trip. Special thanks to the local guys I met on the way out that gave me good directions on how to avoid the traffic on the way to Clingmans Dome, my next highpoint later this day.

Elk Gardern
Climbed up from the Elk Garden Trailhead. Nice hike and way to start my HP road trip in the Appalachians. A slight dusting of snow on the summit and its surrounding area this time of year.
I climbed this in spring 1999 (I think). I have only the haziest recollection of it.

bouldering
ive hiked nearly every trail in the mount rogers area, but i would like to comment on the bouldering potential it has. nearly every peak houses loads of boulders and ive established many probems from v-0 to v-6 grades. even on the road leading up to the park and at the visiters center have amazing areas with untold potential. ill be posting more about the climbing here as i climb and complete more projects.

Ponies and Boulders
Hiked up from Grayson Highlands SP - took us over 6 hours. Loved the "wild" ponies and side detoured to scramble on many boulders. Clear day with great views. A really fun highpoint - glad there isn't a road to the top.
We camped in a car campsite the first night as we got there late, and woke up snowed in our tents. That wasn't exactly what we were expecting in southern VA.
The sky cleared up though, and it was beautiful hiking through the snow covered highlands. Some windier areas lacked snow cover, and the ground was frozen. The thermometer stayed below 25 F.
I went again in the summertime, and it was hot! Saw some wild ponies on that trip as well.

Beautiful, both times
I hiked up (packless, being lazy) while doing a section from Trail Days. Amazing how it's an island of cool pine forest surrounded by high open country.
Did the hike again in August 2006 with my wife. This time I noticed the USGS summit marker atop a rock.

Ponies, Yippee!
We hiked in along the AT and saw quite a few ponies. The summit is uneventful, but the AT shelter was nice along with some very nice views. One of my favorite eastern highpoints!
I went with some friends to camp near Thomas Knob. Leaving from Elk Garden later in the afternoon, we hit the summit on the way up. The skies were perfectly clear with views stretching for miles. Once the skies grew dark we watched satellites and meteors from our sleeping bags (we didn't bring any tents). The temperatures got into the lower 30s according to our thermometers. We couldn't have asked for a better day.

Fun Climb
Did it with a couple of friends. Saw ponies on the way up and on the way down. No view from the actual summit, which lies less than a mile from the AT.

snow camping
This was my first experience of snow camping. We got hit by an unexpected storm and ended up walking around the Grayson Highlands through 6 inches of snow. A couple years later I returned to Rogers via AT section-hiking all the way from Springer.
