Flowers and wild horses
We hiked from the overnight parking area near Massie Gap, admiring the flaming azaleas at lower elevations and tons of pink rhododendrons at higher elevations. The views along the trail were spectacular most of the way. We encountered the wild horses a few times. A few were somewhat aggressive, maybe because they had foals, either blocking the trail or herding us up the trail. What a beautiful place! HP26

Cool Area
Hiked in a cloud most of the time and spent the night in the 2-story shelter with three other hikers. Completely unique and fun.

Easy enough stroll through high grass. Great hike with several other giant rhododendron forests to hike through nearby.

Great day to hike to the top. Loved the wild horses and the views.

I spent the night at Greyson Highlands St Pk and woke to overcast skies and cold drizzle. The hike to Mt. Rogers follows the AT and passes through some beautiful country. No views from the top, but views along the way made the hike worth it.

Love this area!
I loved this hike, and can't wait to go back and camp there someday. The ponies were extremely tame and friendly, and the hike was absolutely gorgeous!

Awesome area!
I go to Rogers every year. It is an awesome mountain with a ton to do. You can ride a pony and then go bouldering! Fun place...
I do not know the exact date i summited, since i have been here many times. There were many wild ponies and the berries were ripe. Rogers is one of my favorite places in Virginia, most of all, the rolling grasslands.
Saw some wild ponies and enjoyed the hike across the balds

From Massie Gap. Saw 3 groups of wild ponies, and boy is the AT rugged along here. Us west coasters get spoiled by the good trail maintenance we have. I started bagging state highpoints in 1985. Summited this one while on my 8000-mile Great American Road Trip, in which I bagged the last 5 of my 49 state high points. Decided 12 years ago to forego Alasaka, I'd much rather go to Nepal if I can go on another 3 week climb somewhere. Coincidentally the destination of our road trip was my 40th college reunion at M.I.T., the college founded by William Barton Rogers for whom the peak is named.

Summit hidden in trees...the route over Wilburn Ridge makes up for the lack of views on top. Spectacular open country.

"Do you like PONIES???"
To call the ponies "wild" would be a vast overstatement. The adults were about as tame as could be, although the baby ponies were skittish. Within the first mile, a woman accidentally knocked a large rock loose and it landed on one of my toes. Rather than focus on the pain and let swelling take hold, I sped up and let the circulation continue. As a result, I summited within 1h15m, passing every other day-hiker also ascending. My toe gradually felt better, and I proceeded to explore miles of other trails near the area. Highly recommended hike, and I want to go back.
I met another State Highpointer ("Bob") and tried to give him directions to Black Mountain (KY), which he planned to attempt the next day. I hope he made it. For me, Mount Rogers was State Highpoint #36 reached overall.

Easy High Point
This was a short fun easy hike a few friends and I did at night to make it a little more exciting. Lots of little pony's. One of my friends try to ride one but got bit up! Good time, good time!

My wife and I hiked this one via the Appalachian Trail. Very beautiful and enjoyable hike. Unfortunately the highpoint was in the trees, but the views along the way more than made up for it.

This was a solo trip to climb some state highpoints in the mid Atlantic states. Amazingly I had the summit to myself on a beautiful day. This was my second attempt having aborted an initial climb after being drenched in heavy rains over 10 years earlier.
