Via Church's Pond
First summit of Mt. Rose. Approached from Church's pond. Found a use trail on the ridge behind the pond that went to Contact pass but had trouble following it because of patchy snow. Set out cross-country from Contact pass to the saddle between Church and Mt. Rose, then up the main trail to the summit. Returned via use trail on the east side of Mt. Rose then cutting across to Contact Pass. This turned out to be surprisingly steep - not sure I'd recommend it to others while there's still snow on the ground.

Mount Rose
A local favorite and one of my many trips to the summit. Great weather this time along with a clear day makes the views impeccable. The New Mount Rose Trail is a medium but very enjoyable hike. With the right pacing and determination this mountain is a great way to experience the best of Reno-Tahoe.

First time at night
We reached the summit in less than 2 hours to view a full moon. Have hiked to the summit a few times, including a run to the summit in August of 2012 in 1h 12 minutes. But this was the first evening hike.

Warmup hike
Loved the last half of the hike, amazing upper ridge, spectacular views from the top over the desert haze. No wind, no clouds. Chipmunks on summit. Good warmup for White mtn peak hike a few days later.

Great Reward Easy Hike
What should have been an easy (4 hour - 10 mile roundtrip) hike turned out to be a 6 3/4 hour hike due to the bad back/knee of my friend who I had brought along to do this hike. The first 2 1/2 miles went well then the steeper climbing started to take its toll on his weak spots. In the end he made it and marveled at the amazing views and the stark contrast of the western slope with all the trees and lakes, and the eastern slope with the brown Nevada high desert below! No worries, after great pizza at JJ's in Reno, he was golfing the next day in Carson without much pain at all.

Red Check
A true walk up. Hiking through the waterfalls and wildflowers was far more interesting than the dreary summit ridge. No need to repeat this hike.
Pretty waterfall on the way up, the trail was annoyingly long on the way down. Nice views of Tahoe on the summit. Done on my drive home from Shasta

Summit via East Face
Approached on the Jones Creek Trail. Began post holing. Snowshoes necessary from 1/4 mile east of Church's Pond. Crampons necessary the last several hundred feet. Had the top to meself, no signs in the snow of humans there for weeks or months. Lenticular clouds in the sky to the southeast. Glorious view!

Rose and Church
I did the normal hike on the way up but then went over to the summit of Church Peak from the saddle between the two and then cut over to the trail on the west edge of the saddle on the way down. There was a faint use path in some places.
1:48 up, 26 min. on top, 25 min. to Church, 1:39 down, 4:19 total RT.

Great Day Trip
Wonderful views, easy up and back, and scramble if you like. Maybe 10-15mph winds at the top. Amazing weather, too. Very worth it for how easy it is.

Christmas Rose
Christmas Day- Me and Alan set out from Jones Creek TH at 4am, pitched tent in the meadow behind Church's Pond and kept going after sunrise. Not a bad route if you LOVE to bushwack for 14 hours over patchy snow.
