Multiple Attempts this Year  Sucess!

Little background: I was born and raised in Reno and climb Rose once a year as a tradition. It's a long day hike but nothing crazy. I live in MN right now, but this was the central mountain in my childhood and holds a special place in my heart.

This year it took me three attempts, which was unusual. The first was with my dog, and the was too much snow between the trailhead and the meadow. It was too warm and I was postholeing too much, and worried about the dog. So I tried again early in the morning by camping on Rose a couple days later, but woke up with COVID a couple miles in! (COVID on mountains is a nightmare). Then I tried a week later after I recovered, and summited.

This year, there was a ton of fairly deep snow. I made it all the way up and back without seeing a single other person, at least past the meadow. It was about 30 degrees plus wind. My record is up and back in 4 hours, but this time it took me 7-8 and I was soaked when I got back. Very glad I brought my ice axe.

Normally this is a simple hike, but there had just been several snow storms. The views of both Reno and Tahoe are amazing.

With Church Peak  Sucess!

Smoky and hazy, poor air quality from all the fires. Poor views, but a beautiful area and great trail. Short scramble to get Church Peak on the way back.

Wildflowers in full bloom   Sucess!

I do this hike multiple times each year, but yesterday’s trip was the best. We summited using the standard (new Mt. Rose trail). Wildflowers were in full bloom all along the trail.

We left slightly earlier than usual (7:20 AM), just in time to beat the crowds. We were the only ones on top for the first 10 minutes...then it was a steady train of people the entire time. Fortunately there was little to no wind yesterday. It’s common to have high winds up there, especially in the Fall.

On the way down, we passed dozens of people and some dogs. There are tons of people between the trailhead and the waterfall, as the falls are the main destination for most people on the trail.

There were only two mounds of snow left and they were easily circumnavigated. Two small creek crossings that are just a rock hop. Your feet won’t even get wet.

The first section of the trail between the parking lot and the falls is very gentle and provides magnificent views of Lake Tahoe within the first 15 minutes. Much of the trail to the falls is under forest cover. After the falls, it’s mostly exposed and much steeper, but only moderately difficult if you hike regularly. Many trail runners use this trail because it is a nice soft trail without too many rocks or roots.

From the summit you can see Reno, Lake Tahoe, I-80 (Truckee corridor), the Sierras, Church’s Pond, and Mt. Lassen on a clear day.

It typically takes me about 4.5 hours for this hike.

Day hike  Sucess!

Summited with my fiancé and my mom. Mom has experienced knee soreness on this hike prior, vowed to never go again, but she wanted to attempt it one more time with me! I gave her my trekking poles and some IB profen up top and she did not have any pain this day! Really great view of Tahoe and Reno from the top, would love to come back and do some backpacking in this area. Afterwards they headed straight down while I snagged Church Peak and caught up with them on the trail.

From Mt. Rose Summit TH  Sucess!

#1 10-27-17 Solo. Bluebird day, almost no wind on the summit. 2+04 up. Many others were enjoying the ideal fall weather. A few icy stretches on shaded parts of the trail but caution made everything safe. My 14th Nevada CoHP.

Beautiful  Sucess!

Took the standard way up, there were some large patches of snow below the waterfall, but nothing difficult and the consequences were trivial. This is my first peak in the area and I'm so impressed by the views.

This is a great hike, but unfortunately there was so much smoke and haze I could only barely make out Lake Tahoe.

My First Summit  Sucess!

7/24/2015---Mount Rose: Nevada-----10,776’
Uncle Roger and I hiked this on an absolutely perfect day. Even in July the elevation and wind on the mountain makes for cool air. I wore a hoodie the entire way up and didn’t ever break a sweat.
I wasn’t in good shape for this hike, but I never really needed to stop and take a break; granted, Roger was taking all the breaks so I didn’t end up being the wimpy one.
o Begin at 8,800’ and end at 10,776’
o Approximately 2,000’ of elevation gain over 5 miles.
o 10 miles roundtrip

thunder  Sucess!

did this hike in the afternoon after flying into Reno. I was surprised by quite a bit of thunder in the area although it never got too close and it never ended up raining. Great views of Reno and Lake Tahoe of course

Not too difficult, but nice  Sucess!

My dad and I completed the 10 mile hike in about 3 hours. It was our last morning in the area and we had a plane to catch in the afternoon, so we decided to try and reach the summit in a timely fashion. It was definitely a nice hike, I remember the trail being relatively level until the last 1.5 miles which was at a solid incline.
