Route Climbed: Devil's Backbone Date Climbed: Setempber 21 2003  Sucess!

I climbed with Jaweed and I am even more of a beginner than him. It is Tuesday and my quads are still burning with every move! Very cool hike though. Next time I plan on listening to T O O L on full blast with my mp3 player during the tough parts of the hike in order to block out the thoughts of "Turn back....I can't make it" !

Route Climbed: Devil's Backbone Date Climbed: September 21, 2003  Sucess!

We made our ascent on the Devil's Backbone. The initial climb after the ski lift was difficult for me as a beginner hiker. The distance from there to the bottom of the backbone was scenic and comfortable. The climb up the backbone was tough and at times very windy. From the summit we were able to see Mt. Baden-Powell and one of the guys we went with went ot the other "west peak" of baldy which takes about 30 minutes from the summit. For me the most difficult part of the hike was the descent. Some of the time we ran and other times we were taking baby steps because it was so steep. A great workout and a great hike! Next week...San Yacinto!!!

Route Climbed: Devil's Backbone Date Climbed: November 17, 2002  Sucess!

I went on my birthday to finally bag Mt Baldy- I had tried before, but my hiking buds had to turn around. I was on the last stretch only to find a sandblasted wind tunnel. The hike was well worth it, however. Not only was the hiking an exciting experience, but the summit was excellent! I made some HAM radio contacts well over 100 miles, we took in the view, and we had a fun time sharing stories with other climbers.

Route Climbed: Devil's Backbone Date Climbed: Mon, Sept 1, 2003  Sucess!

Ran up as part of the annual Labor Day 8-mile "Run to the Top of Mt. Baldy" Race. Great race. On top in 1 hr, 33min. Not bad since my legs were still zonked from running the Pikes Peak Marathon 2 weeks earlier. Very windy on top (30+ mph?) but gorgeous view of the high desert. It was a little smoggy facing west.

Finally completed all four established routes to the summit. Went up Blue Ridge and came down the San Antonio Ski Hut trail to Manker Flat. It was a great day! Met a party of about six camping on the summit.

Beautiful summer day on Mt Baldy. Crowds actually not too bad on the trail given the weather. 28 degrees celcius on top at 11 AM with a nice refreshing breeze.

2hrs 50 min up, 1h 50 min down.

When I got back to my truck (parked at Manker flats), the car beside mine had the windows smashed out and I presume the contents taken. I had heard that this can happen here - good reminder to keep things hidden when parked at this trailhead.

Route Climbed: San Antonio Ski Hut Route Date Climbed: September 3, 2001  Sucess!

Hike this while not in shape, like I did, and pain will become your friend. We made it on our first hike together. Now we hike Mt. Rainier National Park on a weekly basis.

Route Climbed: Ski hut trail, Devils backbone Date Climbed: April 8-9, 2003  Sucess!

Started late afternoon on Tuesday and reached the top an hour before sunset, which was a great sight, and started down late the next morning. On the way down, I almost walked into a pair of mountain goats.

On the mountain again this weekend. The snow is melting out fast. Took the Backbone trail down this time, then down the fire road back to Manker Flats.

Beautiful day on the mountain. Great snow conditions above 8500 ft. Incoming clouds in the afternoon created the most awesome scenery.

Route Climbed: Blue Ridge Trail Date Climbed: June 23rd, 2002  Sucess!

Had a great day at the mountain. While away hikining, somebody broke in my car parked at Guffy Campground and stole all cloths and a sleeping bag. At least the car was a rental...

Route Climbed: Ski Hut Trail to Backbone to Lifts Date Climbed: Feb 9, 2003  Sucess!

Great day with nice weather. Very little snow. Encountered a little snow and ice coming out of the bowl, but other than that just small patches here and there. No need for crampons or ice axe at this time. Windy and cold at the top and down the backbone.

Route Climbed: San Antonio Ski Hut Trail Date Climbed: February 1, 2003  Sucess!

A beautiful day on the mountain with some strong and cold winds at the top, but things couldn't have been too bad, as I met a climber on the summit nattily attired in hiking shorts. Also met about thirty other folks and seven or so dogs. There is very little snow on Baldy this year – only some big patches on the slopes climbing out of Baldy Bowl. The big storms of late December 2002, blew over and destroyed the outhouse at the Sierra Club Ski Hut. I suspect there will be a project to rebuild it this spring. (I heard about the Columbia tragedy from another hiker near the top, we hadn't listened to the radio during the drive to the mountain and were oblivious to the days sad events).

Route Climbed: Manker Flats to Baldy Summit Date Climbed: January 25, 2003  Sucess!

It was an amazing day today. It was difficult to believe that it was January. We didn't encounter any snow until crossing the bowl. The snow wasn't too bad going up (I didn't bring my snowshoes). We summited at about 3pm. The temperature on the summit was about 40 degrees. The winds were very strong. The temperature was dropping on our way down. As a result, the snow was turning to ice. It made it difficult to walk on the trail. We had to go off-trail to avoid slipping. Crampons would not have hurt.

We encountered a few adventurous people that were going to spend the night.
