Hiked up 14,043 ft. Mount Sherman today under cloudy skies. Started on the Fourmile Creek road around 8:30AM and hiked up to some abandoned mines. We then noticed the weather was turning south so we waited a bit for the storm clouds to pass us before continuing on. We gained the ridge and hiked the rest of the way to the cloud covered summit. Made the summit around 10:45AM. Winds were strong, but it was a short hike and was over before we knew it. Back to the car around 12:30PM. A good way to end September.

Wind & weather
#1 08-07-14 Never met a 14er I didn't like. Wanted to accomplish the Tour de Sherman but low viz hindered the effort. Maybe next time. Did however catch both Gemini's and Mt. Sheridan. Took normal route from the east. #2 10-04-24 W/Lana. From the Iowa Gulch TH. 2+50 up, very windy from the saddle to about 50' below the summit ridge. Climbed Sheridan after. Peak 82 in the 80in80 project. Didn't climb Elbert because of CO road 11 being closed.

We had great weather and an easy climb. Summit was tons of fun with people wearing patriotic gear, sharing flags for photos and generally celebrating Independence! Best part of the day was going down the "toboggan run" at the bottom snow field. The sides of the run at the top are now 5' deep!
Beautiful day on the mountain. Got to hike this one with my amazing wife.

From the Fairplay Side
Quick trip up and down with Greg and Colette. Then jumped in the vehicle and drove back to Salt Lake City. Next time I will tag some additional peak while I am there. Wind made it a bit chilly.
08/07/2014--Second time. Included Sheridan and North and South Gemini this time.

Fierce winds
Some woman who turned around claimed winds 80+mph winds, but we caught the worst of it only in one spot. Neat old mine and fun glissade chute.

More fun then I thought
My roommate and I went to go give this a shot. He wasn't acclimatized well and stopped before the saddle. The saddle was covered in snow and I got to make it a small solo snow climb and play with my ice axe. A few small feet of vertical snow climbing to get over the lip and onto the saddle. The rest of the trail was fun. Slid down the snow when finished. My roommate did some ice ax training too

South Slopes
CMC hike. We started from Leavick, but left the road after about 1.75 miles and headed up the south slopes. The weather was pretty lousy all day: the mountain was socked in, but we did find the summit. It was pretty windy and cold, and we had some snow. We decided to forgo Gemini due to the weather, which was good, because we heard some thunder, and we had to deal with unrelenting graupel on the way down. There's still enough snow for some glissading, and one of our number had a boot sucked off in the snow, but he was able to retrieve it. This was my 2nd time on Sherman.
3rd time up, this time a spring climb from Iowa Gulch in combination with Mt Sheridan. Road still closed at winter closure and route mostly snow until just below Sherman-Sheridan saddle.
