Great Workout!
I used this hike to help train for Mount Rainier. I actually went on two hikes: April 22 (with another SP poster) and then one week later, April 29, by myself.
I took a 20-lb pack with me during the April 29 trip: Ascending to the trail's summit in 100 minutes, and then half-jogging/ half-walking during a 50-minute descent. I have yet to climb the entire Haystack Scramble; that will be my next Mount Si trip.
Hiked the trail for the first time as a training hike for a planned Rainier summit attempt in June. Took us two hours and forty minutes to get up to the Haystack. This included 10 minutes to find my partner's lost contact and time to talk to a member of the Mountaineers and another fellow who had ample Rainier advice for us. I scrambled up the Haystack with my 50lb pack on my back which made the scramble awkward, but the view was totally worth it. We made it back down in under 90 minutes, including a 10 minute break at the first set of benches (mile 1 or so?).
This was a great hike that really worked us with our 50lb packs on our backs. We'll return again, I'm sure.

Good training spot, but quite a bore
I can definately see why people like this for a training area, but the trail is quite boring until the end. Still, it is a hell of a work out if you go quick.

one bored day
got bored one day and decided to solo up this...I usually just goto the rock climbing spots lower on little si. One of the few places overhanging enough to stay dry in the rain.
Been up this COUNTLESS times. I despise it now. The view is not that good, unless you really like North Bend, and there are over a 100 ppl/day hiking this trail. If you go up, go up the old trail that starts from the little Si parking lot. Much less people, nicer scenery and a steeper trail. A great trail to run down!

New Years Day Tradition
A large group of OSAT hikers carry on a tradition begun by our founder before the organization was established by hiking Si on New Years Day. Typically 20+ participate, some of whom also climb Si on Thanksgiving and Christmas (the "Tri Si"). Compact snow and ice on the upper 700 vertical of the trail made most hikers happy to have traction devices this year.

28 Sep 2006 - A nice hike with a fun scramble to the top. Nice vertical relief down to the valley.
11 May 2007 - Great day. Decided to cruise up with some "extra" weight for training. Lots of people out enjoying the hike.

finally, a summit
I couldn't tell how many times that I have hiked up to the summit plateau on si and never climbed the haystack. today was great for a scramble and si needed to get checked off the list. no wind, too many bugs on top. fotunately, none that bite.
Hiked up 4X. Definately a hill not a mountain. Good training though. My best time was 3:41 and my worst was just under 4 hours car to car. Extremely popular.

Mt. Si Main Trail
We left the house at 3am. Then reached the TH at 6:30am and started hiking about the same time. Made the summit at 10am with no one else around. After the summit we went over to the other peak and got some more pictures. Then slowly walked back to the TH and got there at 2pm. Good hike and fun scramble. Weather was hazy and partly cloudy.

I started at 4:30 in the morning so by the time I reached the top the sun was just starting to come up. It was an awsome view. I felt like I was on a little island because all around we was fog as far as I could see.

Nasty weather
Day started off alright, but kept getting cloudier and more ominous. We got to the top just as the rain started up, took the obligatory picture, and started running! (Rain finally stopped about when we got to Snag Flat, but by then we were soaked to the bone.)
Also climbed on July 17, 2004.

Avoid the Lemmings
This is a great quick hike during the week if you want to avoid the weekend lemming outings! Avoid this hike during the busy weekends unless you enjoy following the boots of the person in front of you.

This was the second time I climbed Si. It was still a fun hike. I climbed it with the guy bellow me, Kyle. We tried to climb teneriffe but it was too snowy. We definetely needed crampons or snow shoes. It was a fun hike none the less.

Almost snow-free
We had initially hoped to climb both Teneriffe and Si, but the amount of snow above 3000 ft. on the Teneriffe Road made Si the only summit of the day. Very minimal snowpack on Si, scramble is about 95% snowfree. The temps at the top with windchill I'd estimate at about 30F, pretty cold considering it was about 55F at the trailhead elevation at the time.

Hmmm . . .
Okay, so this isn't much of a mountain, right? But you have to admit that standing on the summit and looking West at downtown Seattle is a nice reminder of why you live in the NW.
