HP #4 Lion's Head / Boott Spur
It was a gorgeous day. We were worried it was going to rain as it was sprinkling in the morning but it turned into the perfect day. We headed went up Lion's Head trail and came back down Boott Spur. It was an unforgettable experience.

Winter [like] Ascent
Solo-hike up via the Jewel Trail. There was still at least 2-3 feet of snow everywhere. Winds were in the mid 40's and the temps around 20 degrees at the summit. Windchill was 1 degree.
Could have never done it without snow-shoes.

Lions Head - Winter Route
Beautiful weekend to climb washington.Spent Friday climbing ice on Willeys slide. Hiked up to Harvard cabin on Saturday and set up camp. Hiked to Huntigtons ravine Sat night to do some ice anchor and belay training. Got up Sunday morning and summitted via Lions Head Winter Route. Sunny, 20 degrees, and only 30-40 mph winds above tree line. Great day on Mt Washington.
Been doing the Whites since I was a kid. Was up there last weekend on a beautiful couple days perched up on the ridge over Great Gully, best winter weather I've ever had up there.

Crappy weather, as is Washington's MO, but made it through
State HP #13 for us, and we debated going up in the first place. The weather sucked, and it was increasingly foggy, and cool, drizzly the whole day. Oh well, we made it up Tuckerman's, with near white out fog, and yes, heavy winds towards the summit.
First climb ever. Definitely underestimated the weather, conditioning and will needed. Favorite quote by my marathon running climbing buddy about a quarter way up -- "marathons are for sissys!"

Hut to hut highpoint
Completed as part of a hut to hut weekend along the Presidential range. #9
After watching the old steam engine start its run up the mountain, we took the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail from the cog parking lot. Much of the trail follows a waterfall with multiple drops, so there is awesome scenery most of the way. Beyond Lake of the Clouds, we hiked the Crawford Path to the summit. Views were limited because clouds had enveloped the summit just before we arrived. Due to time constraints and weather, we wussed out and rode down the toll road with my wife, who had driven to the summit. HP42

Caught In A "Hurricane"
With very poor weather looming over the mountain, I chose to drive up the Auto Toll Road to the summit parking lot. What I did not expect, however, was the drastically different conditions at the top. There was thick fog and the air temperature had lowered six degrees (from 39 to 33) in only 15 minutes. Most of all, the wind was increasing, reaching near-hurricane force when I ventured solo to the summit. Everyone thought I was crazy, but I did not come all that way to stop at the summit gift shop and I did not want to wait there as the conditions continued to worsen. I found myself going between the Tip Top House entrance (for a tiny brief wind shelter) and the summit multiple times until I finally was able to get a usable summit photo. The wind was knocking me down, repeatedly, and my fingers were nearly freezing. This was my 46th State Highpoint.
