Route Climbed: usually Tuckerman or Lion's Head Date Climbed: several times
This mountain has been the grand challenge of many summer seasons. Trying to do it as a day trip from Boston is not easy, traffic stinks and the mountain is just plain big.
My only attempt to climb it as an overnight trip didn't work out for me, the story is here
Route Climbed: From Pinkham Notch Date Climbed: Approx. 1978
I climbed Mount Washington with may father when I was a young boy. It was both his and my first "real" mountain, and marked the beginning of what would later become an obsession. At that time I don't think he or I realized just how quickly the weather can turn deadly on the mountain. Now I remind him of how much more dangerous "our climb" was as compaired to the summits that I bag now-a-days!
Was a great day on top. Very cool and windy with partial clouds, but still had great views of the surrounding country. The fall colors were outstanding. The hoar frost was several inches thick and there was a little snow around. I'm glad we got up because we are told they closed everything at top the next day.
Route Climbed: Ammonoosuc Ravine/Crawford Path Date Climbed: June 17, 2003
Blynn and I climbed to the summit after a festive night at the Lakes of the Clouds Hut (reminiscent of summer camp but more challenging to get to). The weather was nothing short of incredible for Mt. Washington --clear skies, mid seventies and 20 to 40 mph winds. It was pretty disconcerting to see all of the tourist/weather stuff at the top. We descended to the Tuckerman Crossover and returned to the hut via the Bigelow Lawn. Descending on the talus was tough as I was pretty bruised from a fall I had on the "Ammi" the previous day.
Route Climbed: Presidential Traverse Date Climbed: 28 November, 2004
Did a very nice early winter Presidential traverse, from Crawford Notch on rte 302 to Appalachia Parking Lot on Rte 2. Hiked up to Mitzpah Springs hut late Friday night, hauled ass all the way to Madison Hut Saturday, then down Valley Way trail to Appalachia on Sunday. Got to car before 11, only to find it broken into...but that's another story...
Route Climbed: Huntington up, Lions Head down. Date Climbed: Sept 9, 2004
Now what? I've done the big one? I guess its time to learn some winter camping. A SPECTACULAR day for a climb. The views were FABULOUS. We could see for miles!
Did this twice, in the winter by the Lion's Head route and back to Hermit Lakes via the Boot Spur and Link and then in the Summer as I completed another section of the AT.
Route Climbed: Lion Head Winter Route Date Climbed: 1/25/03
This was my first exposure to winter mountaineering. I went with a friend who taught me all the basics (self-arrest, crampon travel, etc.) The weather was nasty (50mph winds and windchill of -50F and poor visibility) near the top, but it was still a great feeling to stand on the summit.
Route Climbed: Great Gulf Trail Date Climbed: July 19, 2004
My brother and I hiked in the rain until we reached the treeline. The views hiking up were Incredibly Foggy and at the top Foggy, 4pm Foggy, 5pm we saw about an ounce of blue sky.
At the top you watch people get off the COG and cars and that brings even more accomplishment within yourself.
Next time I am driving up so I can get that bumper sticker "My car climbed Mt. Washington."
Route Climbed: Great Gulf Trail Date Climbed: July 19, 2004
Was planning on hiking 6 Husbands then Jefferson to Clay to Washington, but a steady downpour prevented that. My brother and I headed up the Great Gulf River, er, Trail from the Bluff.
The first section was either muddy or was an actual brook, and every time we'd brush up against a tree you'd get soaked. Once we got to the treeline however this became a fun hike. The boulders were more challenging than probably normal because of the rain. Visibility was about zero, but it was quite a surreal experience to hear the cog train, then see it at the last second as it "flys" by.
Enjoy the meal at the summit. If you're hiking with my brother, make sure you get a bite of his whoopie cookie before he devours it in two huge bites.
Tuckerman's was closed. We made it up Lions Head, but conditions were bad towards the top, and so was visibility, so we had to find our own way, straight up the rocks, with 75 MPH winds, and -4 degrees windchill.
They told us to go right to the shelter in the summit area, but I summited anyway.
