Close

Got to within 400 vertical of the summit. Snow conditions were brutal and weather unpredictable. Created own boot path from Outpost Camp on. Awesome climb, coming back to knock it off hopefully soon.

If at first...  Sucess!

My first attempt in April 2006 failed. Second time was the charm. It snowed about an inch the night before, so the trail above Trail Crest was insanely beautiful.

1960 My First Fourteener  Sucess!

I was just 13 years old when I first climbed Mount Whitney with my father, Thurston Edward Sydnor, my 15-year old sister, Mary Margaret Sydnor, and my 11-year old brother, William Edward Sydnor. We hiked from Whitney Portal to Mirror Lake, ate supper, then hiked in the early evening to Trail Encampment where we spent the cold night. We were naive but bold, and climbed the trail to the summit without any difficulty. Our cocker spaniel dog, Penny, loyally made the ascent with us. There were no trail permits in 1960; you just hiked the trail to the summit.

First 14er!  Sucess!

What a great hike! I added this hike (main trail from Whitney Portal) to a long road trip on a whim, as the weather was great and permits readily available. A long day-hike but well worth it! My first time experiencing the loopy feeling at high altitude :) I don't want to see how busy the trail is during peak season . . . it was busy enough at the end of October!

Success on 2nd Attempt!!!  Sucess!

Was turned back by weather and very deep snow just three weeks before but this time spelled Victory!!! Awesome climb, awesome scenery. A month later I was standing on the summit of Mt. Rainier.

Whitney, finally  Sucess!

I'd been planning a winter ascent of the mountaineer's route since the fall before. On the first attempt in February I was turned back by a storm. I cancelled the next planned trip in March due to another storm. Finally, during a perfect 2 day weather window I did it. It was my first ascent of Whitney.

Mountaineers Route  Sucess!

Andy and I climbs Whitneys MR for the first time. Camped at Iceberg lake which was frozen over. Watched as four climbers were stranded overnight on the main face of Whitney. We talked to them at the top and they said their leader underestimated the climb time. Four dudes with one space blanket roped up on the side of a mountain...= very long cold night. Great climb would highly recommend.

Naked Summit  Sucess!

Soloed the dog route in deep spring snow up the left side snow chute, bipassing the switchbacks to the south. The summit experience is one of great reward. If a person is on top and over four feet tall, their elevation is over 14,500 at eye level!! I would like to climb one of the 5.8 rock routes next time.

Whitney Traverse  Sucess!

Ascended Mountaineer's Route. Bivy'ed on top and descended main trail. Worst night sleep in my recent memory.

Re: Whitney Traverse

Yes, that was me carrying the steep-and-cheap special sleeping pad up the mountain. It paid off because that was the only comfortable thing about that night.

A Long Walk on Good Trails  Sucess!

It was nice to bag the summit. Hardly any people on the mountain.

A Very Educational Climb

Didn't make the summit but my buddy Dave and I learned some valuable mountaineering lessons. First morning at Lower Boyscout we found that our stove wouldn't work in that cold so we had no access to water. We ran into two fellow climbers, Robb and Gareth, that were really amazing and provided us with water and some great advice for us novices. Thanks guys, you really saved our trip! Next winter Dave and I plan to give the summit another go, but this time with the proper preparation.

Perfect Day to Summit..  Sucess!

This was the best weather I have ever had in my several times on Whitney. Cool, but not cold, light wind, and no haze in the Owens Valley. In August this same year, we had snow. Fantastic weekend outing coming up from the Portal and camping at Trail Camp.

1st time  Sucess!

Hit the switchbacks from Trail Camp at 230 in the morning. My hiking buddy and I thought it be cool to catch the sunrise plus get up the Mountain & back down before it got to late in the day. I am so glad I made the time this year to come up here! Looking forward to a return trip to hike more of the surrounding areas.

California Dreaming

June will mark 10 years since I did Whitney. As a delinquet 15 year old I ingnored eating and drinking water at high altitudes, and learned the hard way (projectile vomit at the summit)
