Overview

This double mountain is located on the Southern Buttress of Mont Velan or V'lan (3.734m) . This long ridge starts from Altitude 3.650 meters at the southern end of the ice cap to end at Mont Saron, above the Municipalities of Etroubles, Allein and Doues in the Gran San Bernardo Valley. It has two distinct peaks a hundred meters away from each other with the farthest or Northeast slightly higher (Southwest Summit 3.141 meters approximately and Northeast Top 3.144 meters) "linked" one with the other from an almost straight summit ridge. Generally it is a destination in its own right, while on rare occasions it is used as a starting point, logically starting either from the square with parking (characteristic stone cross and wooden fountain) or from the new Letey Shelter at the Champillon's Pasture as well as through the Col Champillon) for the crossing to Salliaousa (3.322m) also bypassing the Tête des Crêtes (3.258m). Easy ascension-excursion which, however, in case of deep snow, requires a certain caution and attention especially in the first part up to the Champillon Pass and on the first back-hump 2.991 meters, that precedes the Southwestern Summit. While the stretch on the ridge is quite safe, even if you have to pay attention if in the presence of snowy frames. In any case, the climb is easier than it appears from an analysis from below, being made up of a series of overlapping and confusingly stacked boulders, even if, at times, a little unsafe. Topographically speaking, while on the Western side a whole series of steep and parallel gullies fall over the initial part of the Vallone di Menouve (collateral valley of the Gran San Bernardo), on the Eastern side, starting from the Northeast Summit, a rib descends, with barely mentioned and sinuous course as well as formed by rocks alternating with grassy slopes, designed to separate the Comba des Crêtes (in the North) from that of Champillon (South). From the appearance of these gullies derives the toponym that refers to the "Chenail" of the patois language of the Aosta Valley and such as to mean precisely a gully (see also Petite Roise in the Monte Emilius Group, between the antetop and the Vetta on the Western side, "leTzenail des Femalles", or the gully of the females ibex, with this name well known to the hunters of Grand Brissogne). Even Abbé Joseph Maria Henry, Parish Priest of Valpelline, in his "Guide du Valpelline", 1925, page 28, also "L'Alpinisme e le Clergé Valdôtain", reveals how the ancient toponym was already transcribed on the Top with minium lead and relative altitude (at the time 3.201 meters, as per "IGM Map" of 1899).
