The Twin Peaks Of Teufelstättkopf And Laubeneck -- Overwiev

Teufelstättkopf and Laubeneck are the first distinctive, tall and pyramid shaped rock outcroppings in the eastern end of the Klammspitzkamm of the Ammergau Alps. It's southern slopes, a mountain forest of spruce and beech trees, are dropping steep into the Graswang valley. The northern slopes are moderate steep and heavyly wooded as well with high alpine pastures. The pastures to the north are summer ranches with free roaming cattle and little cabins for the ranchers and forest workers. Kühalm, Hengstwald hut and Laubeneckalm are just below/above the treeline. The August Schuster Haus aka Pürschling hut is located in the gap between the Teufelstättkopf and the Pürschling peak. This is a German Alpine Club lodge and a well known target for for many tourists and hikers.
The Teufelstättkopf and Laubeneck peaks are all season mountains and offer some gnarly ski descents in very steep couloirs. Rock climbing routes are on the south face of Teufelstättkopf and east face of Laubeneck. In the winter month a moderate ice climb (waterfall) is just below the east face of Laubeneck and a good combination with a ski tour.

Getting To The Trailheads:

From the north on Highway B23 either to Unterammergau or Oberammergau. If you like to start in Linderhof continue on B23 and turn right in Ettal onto Plansee road (big intersection) Continue for about 8 KM.

From the south on Highway B2. Turn left in Oberau onto HWY B23 either to Ettal, Linderhof, Oberammergau or Unterammergau


The local RVO buses provide an excellent all day service from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Oberammergau. Ideal for those without cars who base themselves near to Garmisch-P. Check the links section for the URL of the relevant RVO timetable.

Trailheads and getting to the peaks

The trailheads are in Unterammergau (most common), Oberammergau and Linderhof

Parking lot at the Schleifmühle Restaurant in Unterammergau (fee) - forest road to Pürschling hut - trail along the east ridge

Parking lot at the Schleifmühle Restaurant in Unterammergau (fee) - forest road towards Pürschling hut - take right fork (bridge) following to Kühalm - from here steep trail on north ridge

Parking lot at the cemetery in Oberammergau - take steep trail towards Kofel - traverse the north slopes of Brunnberg till the trail forks - from here 2 options, (I) take left trail, climb to the peak of Zahn and follow ridge to the Pürschling hut and continue on east ridge to the Teufelstättkopf peak. (II) take the right handed trail to Kolbenalmsattel and continue on the trail until it merges into the forest road coming from Unterammergau/Schleifmühle -- from here see route description above

Parking lot at the castle in Linderhof - take marked trail (right fork) to Pürschling hut - from there follow the east ridge

To reach the peak of Laubeneck use the trail just below the peak of Teufelstättkopf. The trail runs on the crest of the saddle between both peaks, traverses the vertical east face of Laubeneck and take a sharp left turn when you reach the grassy slopes coming from the peak.

Climbing routes are either on the vertical rock faces of Teufelstättkopf or the east face of Laubeneck. Grades are V-IV (UIAA scale). In the winter season there is a 75 degree waterfall just below the east face of Laubeneck, and it's a nice combination with a ski approach / descent

Skiing is possible in following areas:
-From Teufelstättkopf are several lines down to the Pürschling hut and from there back down to the traihead.
-There are very steep couloirs north of the ridge between east ridge and north ridge (experts only - super gnarly and cool cliffs to huck off!)
-Between Teufelstättkopf and Laubeneck with start in the saddle between both peaks -- long way out through heavily wooded "Hengstwald"
-Northern meadows straight down from the peak of Laubeneck --- long way out through heavily wooded "Hengstwald"

When To Climb, Hike And Ski:

Hiking/Climbing

The Twin Peaks are a year-round target. Best hiking season is late spring/early summer and late summer/fall. July and August are the hottest month with sometimes high humidity and a high chance of severe thunderstorms.

Skiing

The skiseason might start in early December and goes through March/April.

Red Tape:

The Teufelstättkopf and Laubeneck are located in the Ammergauer Alps Nature Preserve. No permits required, no fees (only for some parking areas). Camping is not allowed

Camping And Huts:

There is a campground in Oberammergau, but as far as I know it's just a huge yard, covered with gravel and mainly used by RV's. It's not
suited well for pitching a tent.

The August Schuster Haus aka Pürschling hut is located in the gap between the Teufelstättkopf and the Pürschling peak. It's a nice place to stay with plenty
of gorgeous views.
