Overview

Black MountainBlack Mountain from Ireteba Peak
Black Mountain and Las VegasBlack Mountain from Castle Rock
Black Mountain is the prominent peak on the south side of Henderson. A great birds eye view of the strip and Las Vegas can be enjoyed from this summit on the south side of the Las Vegas Valley. This peak, volcanic in origin, has black lava cliffs on the east side of the mountain. Numerous mountain ranges can be viewed from the summit including Red Rocks, Spring Mountains, El Dorodo, Jean Dry Lakes, and much more. Black Mountain can be climbed year round. In the summer though hike early in the day or it will be too hot.

The problem many have with this peak is finding a good parking spot. With so much development in the area old ways to be able to hike this mountain have become outdated.

    Minor update

This is a great page and without it I never would have found the trailhead. Just one thing that I noticed, after passing Lewiston Place the parking is on the left side after about 4 houses rather than the first house.

    Trail improvements

The actual length of the hike now is 6.6 miles since the trail was "improved" in the earlier part of 2013. Thanks to a local who shared that info and admitted that he also helped on the work effort. The trail was a bit more gradual than I thought it should be except for the last 500 feet of elevation gain.

    Shadow Canyon Access Point

Although the parking lot off Shadow Canyon Drive is small, there is plenty of street parking all around it. No need to worry about finding a space, even on busy weekends.

    Children

Children refers to the set of objects that logically fall under a given object. For example, the Aconcagua mountain page is a child of the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits.' The Aconcagua mountain itself has many routes, photos, and trip reports as children.
