Hello Tomas ...

This is the land of my forefather; my great grandmother was
born near these mountains. I do not speak your language. These
mountains are the force that binds us together. Someday, I will
return to the dust from which I came ... but these mountains
will remain standing.

Re: Hello Tomas ...

So come back and explore the land of your ancestors! There are some nice mountains in the Czech republic, but higher and more wild are High Tatras mountains. Most of my photos are from High Tatras.

Re: Hello Tomas ...

Yes ... I wish it was so simple, my friend. The High Tatras are
very popular throughout the world. I suppose you have a lot of
climbers and hikers to keep you company. Thank you for sharing!
The Carpathians Mtns. divide Slovakia from Poland, right? There
must be several passes going over those mountains! What's the
weather like ... do you have several winter storms coming from
the Baltic Sea? The Baltic must be a COLD sea, as compared to
the Mediterranean Sea. I would like to travel there once again.
The last time, our ship only went as far as Norway!!!

Re: Hello Tomas ...

I think it is simple .. Leave your ship in Norway next time, and take a flight to Bratislava (Return flight ticket from Oslo to Bratislava and back will cost you 433 USD today - all fines are included). You are right, there are many saddles between Slovakia and Poland in Carpathians. They are mostly in hills deep forests (some even accessible by car). I think the most interesting passes are those in Western and High Tatras's main ridge. They were used during holocaust by jews trying to escape defeated Poland.. Maintainers of chalets helped them, sometimes sacrificing their chalets, sometimes their own lives. Current maintainers of chalets could speak a lot about that. There were brutal fights between Nazi and Russian plus czechoslovak armies, for instance also on the ridge of Belianske Tatry, but especially in east Carpathians with deep forests. SP member Henryk has plenty of photos from these areas. Baltic is a really very cold sea, but no winter storms can get from the sea to High Tatras, the range is too far away. We've got some severe winter storms every year in Tatras. Tatras are quite popular, so there's high probability you meet tens of people in winter and hundreds of people in summer... But there are some places, where hardly anybody goes. Some are very romantic. I must lead my girlfriend there ... :)

Re: Aaaaaaaaaah ...

Tomas, that's what I like about you the most ... your fasination
for history and mountains. I know that my Great Grandmother's native country of Czechoslovakia has faced many brutal hardships in the past.
I am guessing that part of European history has ended. Mountains
stand forever; empires do not! You only live (433 USD) to NORWAY!?!?
That is incredible! Why don't you take your girlfriend on
round-ticket flight to Norway or Sweden??? Just kidding ... you
must maintain your FREEDOM. Are you familiar with Saint Valentine's Day? Please, don't forget your girlfriend on Saint
Valentine's Day, OR you will be in trouble. Yes, SP-member Henryk is also a good friend of mine. Thanks for simplifying something
that I thought would be difficult. You are a wonderful person.
- Cheers from central Arizona! ~ Larry ~

Re: Aaaaaaaaaah ...

We will have a sweet Valentine's day with my girlfriend this year. Everything's prepared, so many brutal hardships will stay in the past :) The only mistake is, that we won't celebrate it in mountains .. Cheers from Praha, capital of Czech republic :)
