Point 9470', Absaroka Range (MT)

Overview

This is a great day hike from the Suce Creek trailhead. Rewarding views can be seen from of the Crazy Mountains, Absarokas and Hyalites. When driving south through Paradise Valley just a few miles from Livingston, it can be seen tucked away amongst foothills to the left. Although it's not particularly prominent, It's unique grey color makes it stands out against the darker colored more volcanic looking rock of neighboring mountains. It has 2 distinctive cliff bands running diagonally. This is a fun, but long day hike. It is not excessively strenuous if you are fit, but snow in early summer makes snow shoes advisable in the higher elevations. The top of this point is adorned with rocks imbedded with marine fossils!

Getting There

From Livingston, take 89 south. Just a few miles down, take a left onto East River Road. Make a left onto Suce Creek Road and follow signs to the trailhead. After a few hundred yards the trail forks. One trail goes down towards the river and one branches off to the left and will bring you to point 9470'. Multiple routes can be taken to the summit. Use your own judgment to your find something suitable for your experience and fitness level.

Red Tape

This trail will take you into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness within the Gallatin National Forest. Mechanized equiptment is not allowed. Also bring bear spray as grizzlies are present here.

Camping

There is very little level terrain here. Camping is possible but most areas are too steep. Camping is not allowed at this trailhead.
