Skårasalen

Overview

Skårasalen is a popular mountain to visit during the ski season. It is one
of the easier 1500 meters in the Sunnmøre area, due to the road that enables
you to drive up to approximately 500 meters above sea level.

The normal route is without difficulties, but pay attention to the risk of
avalanches early in the season.

The summit should give a fantastic view and the descent is great.

Getting There

From Ålesund follow E39 in the direction of Bergen/Volda to the ferry from
Solevåg to Festøy. Take the ferry to Festøy. After the ferry, continue to
drive in the direction of Bergen/Volda until you reach Ørsta.


In the roundabout turn left onto road number 655 towards Sæbø. Follow this
road for about 20 km. Turn right at the sign tovards Kvistadsætra. Follow
the gravel road to the end. There is a 20 NOK fee for driving at the
gravel/mountain road.

The normal route

Follow the tractor road from the parking lot. After a couple of hundred
meters there is a sign on the left side, pointing to the trail. Follow
this trail through the forest. During winter the trail might be hard to
find, but it your direction should be more or less upwards.

When you come out of the forest you should stay at the left side of where
the avalanche runs, which can be recognized because it looks like there
might be a wide river running straight down.

There is a valley between Skårasalen and Blåhornet, following this valley
you turn a bit to the left. After that turn right and follow the north
ridge to the summit. Three large cairns let’s you know that you have
reached the summit.
