Overview

The east slope of Jezerski vrh
The east slope of Jezerski vrh
Jezerski vrh is the 3rd highest summit of Pohorje.

The name Jezerski vrh derives from the fact that there is a lake nearby. “Jezero” in Slovenian means lake. So Jezerski vrh can be translated as ‘Lake Summit’.

Jezerski vrh is east to the highest summit of Pohorje (Črni vrh) – in 2.5 km distance. Its altitude is 1537 m, only 6 meter lower than Črni vrh. The saddle between Črni vrh and Jezerski vrh is approximately in 1490 m altitude.

This summit doesn’t have a shape of a sharp peak. Like the other summits of Pohorje, its shape is more like a dome: deep valleys around the mountain, steep slopes emerging from the valleys, and round, almost flat hilltop.

The mountain is built of dacite that is an igneous, volcanic rock. It doesn’t absorbs water, so there are many steams on the mountain. The streams on the north side go directly into Drava. The streams on the south side flow into the small river Mislinja. This small river confluences with Drava 25 km further, at the end of its valley. The precipitation is around 1000 mm/year, though it also depends on the altitude where it is measured.

Vegetation

Like nestlings in a nest
Crocus in the saddle between Mali Crni vrh and Jezerski vrh
There is Mugo pine here around the lake Ribniško jezero. Mugo pine is not usual in Pohorje, the only other place where it grows is around the Lovrenška lakes (please correct me if there are more such places in Pohorje). Mugo pine normally doesn’t grow in the Alps below 1650 m. This is an exception with the altitude of 1490 m.

On 1450 m altitude there are 40 Swiss Pines or Arolla Pine (Pinus cembra).

You can find here also a kind of cat's ear flower (Hypochoeris uniflora).

And in April you can enjoy the view of crocuses (Crocus neapolitanus) on the meadows.

The slopes of the hill is covered with dense spruce forest.

On the Summit

Jezerski vrh has an almost flat hilltop. It doesn’t provide the usual Alpine peak feeling. It’s more like a playing ground. It’s mainly a grassy area, with a few trees around where the slopes start. As Jezerski vrh has a relatively central position within the Pohorje, you can see a big part of the mountain range here. To west there is Črni vrh (1543 m), while to east you can see the almost horizontal contour of the part of the mountain range where Rogla is. Though Rogla is the best known summit of Pohorje, in reality you can see the less known Mulejev vrh (1533 m). Rogla is behind Mulejev vrh, and it is a bit smaller, so it can’t be really seen.

There is a National Liberation Fight (NOB) memorial on the summit, erected in 1961. An excellent (really!) example of the architectural and sculptural style of the 1960s of the Communist Block.

Ribniško Jezero – the Lake

Ribniško jezero
Ribniško Jezero
There is a few peculiarities with this lake:

1) It’s “almost” on the summit of Jezerski vrh. Only in 60 meter lower position. It’s not usual to have a lake almost on the top of hills. This is possible here because of the character of Pohorje: relatively flat summits and flat mountain ridge. And the rock of Jezerski vrh doesn’t absorbs water. The result is a marshy area nerby the summit with a lake in the middle

2) There is Mugo pine here around the lake. Mugo pine is not usual in Pohorje, the only other place where it grows is around the Lovrenška lakes (please correct me if there are more such places in Pohorje). Mugo pine normally doesn’t grow in the Alps below 1650 m. This is an exception with the altitude of 1490 m.

In order to protect the lake tourists can access it only on a wooden structure. Leaving this artificial path is forbidden. There are a few benches on the lakeshore where you can enjoy the lovely view.

Please note that the tourist paths are not marked very well. The marks are not too frequent, not applied consequently and not exact, so there is chance to lose way.

From Ribniška Koča mountain hut (1507 m)
1 km, 20 minutes. Total altitude difference: 50 m

Access to the trailhead:

We drive to Maribor and then keep on driving upwards the Drava valley towards Radlje ob Dravi. We must pay attention when we arrive to village Ožbolt. 5 kilometres after Ožbolt a road towards Ribnica na Pohorju goes left (across a bridge). When we arrive to the center of Ribnica, a signpost for Ribniška koča directs us left upwards. We follow this road which soon becomes a macadam. In winter time the road is driveable only till the ski slope on Ribniško Pohorje. This extends our walk with 20 minutes.

Route description:

We start at the hut and follow the road in eastern direction to a little grassy saddle. Here we leave the road and direct straight (slightly right if we are coming from the hut) on a path over a meadow upwards. The path through the meadow takes us to Jezerski vrh after 10 minutes of walking. The summit is crowned with a huge monument.

From Koča na Pesku (mountain hut near Rogla, 1386 m)
8.5 km, 3 hours. Total altitude difference: 450 m

Access to the trailhead:

Don’t park at the ski slope keep on driving till Koča na Pesku mountain hut, and park there. Koča na Pesku is a bit further down the saddle of Rogla.

Route description:

From the mountain hut go 1 km west, slightly downwards along the road. Turn left to a footpath at a point where the road takes a right curve. On the path you will get to a small artificial lake. Only a few dozen meters from the lake you cross a small bridge over a stream. Cross the bridge, and on the other hand a signpost indicates that you are on track. The way forward is an ascend on a footpath for about 20 minutes up to the crossroads. Here, from the left side you see the path connected from Hotel Planja. Take way to the right. It is almost horizontal. Later the path crosses a stream and soon after you have to begin a slight ascend over the not so dense spruce forest. You arrive to an outlook tower that is besides the Lovrenška lakes. If you want to see the lakes, then you need to continue your walk beyond the paved path for about five minutes. From the tower go back a few meters to the crossroads where you have to follow the way shown by the signpost right towards the fishing cottage. After a short gentle downhill walk you join the (other) path coming from Hotel Planja. Continue your way on the path on the right side, which crosses the moderate slopes below Lovrenška lakes. As the path is very close to the lakes, the soil cab be wet and marshy. Soon after the path pass exists the forest and continues on a meadow, and leads you to the next crossroads. Take the left one leading slightly down on the meadow. (The path that goes right would take you to village Lovrenc). 2.5 km further the path arrives to the lowest point the route: you are on the 1300m high Prevala Šiklarica. The way forward is a slight ascend. After 1.5 km walk you can turn right to the lovely Ribniško jezero, or you can continue your way to the summit of Jezerski vrh straight up on the marked trail.
