Sawmill campground

it was totally overgrown with vegetation and dilapidated when I visited (I did not camp there). There was a sheepherders wagon nearby, but no other people in the area. One could camp there - I saw no fee collection system. Is the USFS going to close this one?

Re: Sawmill campground

Good info. I haven't looked at the campground for years. It used to be $10. I assume the reason it was abandoned is that everyone just camps for free in the area.

thanks and a question

We enjoyed a hike up Black Mountain last weekend and your directions were very clear - thanks so much! Since you are so knowledgeable about this area, I have a quick question. Online it says that the oldest known tree in Colorado - a bristlecone pine - is located on Black Mountain north of Craig. Would you have any idea where that tree is located? Thanks, Janet

Re: thanks and a question

I know where it is located, but it isn't even close to Craig. It's on the Black Mountain near South Park. The online source (presumably 5280 Magazine-is that your source?) is in error.

The writer of the article probably just googled Black Mountain and saw that there's one north of Craig. That's the wrong Black Mountain though.
