Hmmm, that's an interesting variant! There are a few versions of the story out there, which I guess is not surprising. I went with the one from the son. There's an article on line at http://billingsgazette.com/news/features/outdoors/article_eaaf7add-98f2-5e1c-b292-9b01bf38864b.html that seems to be based on a firsthand interview with Max and that mentions a helicopter pilot being in the bar (and getting Max to the top), but nothing about a bet or a race.
This was named after my Dad Ernst Baumann
As he used to bring folks up to ski down the hill. I have many pics however I just found this website.
He had wanted to name this Mt Solar he accomplished so much uch in such a short time. He also had utility patents on the chairlift and tram was definitely taken away way too soon
