Thanks for some great beta Rich. I'm hoping to make it up there in August. Loved your photos and TR as always.

Which Summit?

The coordinates you give, Lat/Lon: 37.14080°N / 118.6241°W, are for "Point Powell" - the one on the SPS list, and the 13364 elevation is for Mt. Powell on most maps, though the current USGS listed elevation is 13369 (below).

The link link to "A letter from the USGS" a pointing to http://www.climber.org/Secor/powell_usgs.html is a dead link. The entire www.climber.org/Secor/ section was declared obsolete and deleted.

The letter was probably referring to this "Decision Card" http://geonames.usgs.gov/apex/feat_card?p_file=12236 as the 1911 decision pinpoint[ing] the location. This document, submitted May 25, 1911, lists the location at
37 09' 118 38', altitude 13,361 feet.
Point Powell is 37°08'27"N 118°37'31"W. by my location plotted in Google Earth at 37.140628° -118.625421°
Mt. Powell is 37°08'19"N 118°38'02"W elevation 13369' NAD83 (https://geonames.usgs.gov/apex/f?p=gnispq:3:0::NO::P3_FID:265018)
So "Point Powell" ROUNDED to the nearest minute is ALSO at 118°38' - I call it a toss-up as to which the real summit is, but I prefer Pt. Powell. Who know what datum offsets are involved?

As for the altitude, Pt. Powell has more territory above the 13360' contour line than Mt. Powell does. If some point on Point Powell is 9 feet above the 13360' contour, then it is as high as Mt. Powell.

rename page

Steeleman, consider renaming this page "Point Powell" and creating separate pages for Mount Powell and "Point Wesley". I believe all your data is correct but the structure is confusing.
