I had often wondered why I had seen a Mt. Ellinor page up yet. I had a really nice climb in January, and still didn't see the mountain page up, so I figured it was overdue.
I think the awesome early-season glissade alone was enough for this mountain earn a page!
yeah we did this great little gem on Sat. Jan. 18th I think under perfect weather conditions.
And you're right, the glissade was the best we've ever had - all the way down from the summit to the base of that chute with great twists and turns (and unintentional jumps off of protruding rocks). Good stuff!
The "lower" trail adds about a mile, but it feeds directly into the upper trail. When snow is clear on the lower trail, it is usually recommended to start at the upper trailhead to mitigate damage to the vegetation.
Redwic, I am terribly sorry I am just now getting back to you. Both are "official" trailheads. Both are easy to locate, and there should be plenty of parking. It is mostly the upper trailhead that gets a little interesting in the winter time. :-)
Has anyone here done any climbing on the SW ridge of Ellinor? I took the standard route to the summit a couple weeks back and followed the top back the the Southwest. That ridge looks like it descends somewhere towards the Staircase area. My friend and I down-climbed a few hundred feet on the ridge before going back up. Awesome exposed class 3. Just wondering if I'm the only one.

Untitled CommentThanks Andy!
As I am planning several big climbs this year, I am hoping to hit Ellinor again sometime this summer. Maybe there will be some more photo ops then.

Untitled CommentGreat informative page. If you are climbing in winter, will snowshoes suffice or do you need ice axe and crampons?

Lower vs. Upper...Your page references the "lower" trailhead, and the distance from it to the summit being 6 miles.
However, how much distance/elevation is saved by taking the "upper" trailhead? Is it the same trail?

Thanks! One more thing... Is the "upper" trailhead an "official" trailhead? Is it easy to locate? What about parking?
