Impressive

Desolate, depressive... a place to think about.

Really no rock climbing?

To reach the true summit from the road route, is there really no technical climbing? I am staying in Castle Rock in early May and want to hike, but don't want to go all the way up, and then not reach the true summit because I need rope. Any insight here? Easy to get to the trailhead from Castle Rock? Just 5 mile hike one-way to the summit? Elevation gain? Any information is helpful as I really want to do this hike with my girlfriend who is not an experienced climber.

raleigh

east summit - a bit of scrambling class 3 required no rope
west summit - to get to the very top of the highest spine - couple class 5 moves needed -
west summitn is a bit higher than east summit - but personally i liked east summit a lot better for the views

from castle rock - drive to sedalia on us 85 - turn left on cr 67 - turn right on platte river road when you are down at the south platte river valley - trailhead is on the left after a couple miles - road is partly gravel - steep at one spot and a bit b umpy along the river - but no problem for any car
