Great page. I've been to the Sea twice, both times in summer. It's a crazy place! The abandoned motels in Salton City and North Shore are worth poking around. A rather surreal place. And yes, it smells like crap.

We've driven around "Salton City"... scary. The squatter crowd there is something else. It feels like a Mad Max movie.

It may be. There are very few places anywhere below sea level. Death Valley is the only other place I know in the US (not counting dredged areas near the Bay Area in CA). Some big depressions like the Dead Sea or the Turfan in east China are deeper and may have some big (e.g. 500-ft) peaks inside them. But I can't gett to those as easily as the Salton.

Most Entertaining Page Yet

Not only for the unique nature of the peak and its stats but for the quirks and sarcasm. Been to Niland a few times and you've hit the essence of this place on the head!
