Carnedd Dafydd

Overview

Carnedd Dafydd (David's Cairn) resides in the Carneddau range in Snowdonia National Park in Wales. It is the third highest peak in Wales and is often climbed in conjunction with it's neighbor Carnedd Llewelyn.

On a clear day Carnedd Dafydd offers fine views across to Snowdon and the Glyders. The views across the ridge to Carnedd Llewelyn are also quite impressive weather permiting.

There are multiple ascents on Carnedd Dafydd catering to both the walker and scrambler. One of the finer routes combining an ascent of Carnedd Llewyln would have to be the grade 1 scramble of the Cwm Llafar Horseshoe.

Getting There

If climbing any of the Cwm Llafar routes you would start from Bethesda which can be reached via the A5. Park wherever you can find a spot in the village. Then head towards the old waterworks, cross a few stiles and enter the Cwm Llafar valley. Carnedd Dafydd is located on the right hand side at the end of the valley.

Carnedd Dafydd can also be climbed from Llyn Ogwen. Llyn Ogwen is also accessible from the A5.

Red Tape

None for the walker. However, keep dogs on a lead as there are bound to be sheep on the approach. Cwm Llafar is active pasture land so it is best to keep to the climbers trail that skirts the right hand side of the valley.

When to Climb

The Carneddau can be climbed all year round. The Carneddau range is often enshrouded in mist and fog so be careful when route finding especially in the winter.
