Historically, they have some stuff to answer for. The hideous elephant torture was bad enough (it took the elephant hours to die), but they also lynched a black man, then gathered all of the black citizens to the town square to watch his body be burnt. The next day, of course, every black person in and around Erwin left. To this day, it remains thus.
