Thanks for the vote. 20 miles and 5000' elevation gain in a day (approx) may or may not be doable and / or fun for you (It would likely be too easy for Matthew). Personally I just wanted to get away for the weekend and relax. Different strokes ... your opinion may vary.
I think starting from highway 4 would simply lengthen the approach. You might have a look at Mr. Schaffer's guidebook, and / or the USFS map of the Carson-Iceberg wilderness. More than likely you could make a long trip out of it and bag numerous other peaks along the way. Try posting to the California forum for more info. Cheers !
