I've been to Zealand Hut, I've been to the Notch, i've climbed Guyot and Hale, but never heard of this one. Glad to know I can still be surprised! Looks like you had quite a weekend up there.
If you reached Guyot from the Zealand Falls Hut, you've walked within a hundred feet of Zealand's summit! (Unless you did something silly like taking the thoreau falls trail all the way south across the Pemi and the Bondcliff trail back north.)
Nothing so silly. I was doing a loop from Lincoln Brook to Garfield, then clock-wise around the Pemi loop. All I remember about Guyot was that it was snowing heavily and very cold. Probably similar to what you had, but in our case, it was Memorial Day weekend. Ufff.
They're really bad about that up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. More than a dusting and those gates close up. It doesn't hurt that more than a few have managed to get themselves killed by sliding off the Parkway.
When I first moved to NC, some joker in a jeep drove around a locked gate, got cocky, drove too fast, and went sliding off an overlook to his death. Seems he took at least one passenger with him, too; also killed.
