May I please use your photo for a petition against building a tram up Mt. Baldy?Hi there, I'm a Utah resident and Alta skier and I'm gathering signatures for a petition asking Alta and the US Forest service NOT to build a tram up Mt. Baldy. Personally, I feel a tram loading 150 people per hour to the summit of Mt. Baldy would degrade the Alta experience and detract from the majestic solitude of the summit. I'm making a Facebook page to spread awareness on the issue and link to the petition (http://crm.saveourcanyons.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=21666). If you feel so inclined, may I please use this photo on the Facebook page "Keep Mt. Baldy Bald" in order to show the beauty of this iconic peak? Re: May I please use your photo for a petition against building a tram up Mt. Baldy?Thanks again for your beautiful photo. It is catching people’s eyes so they’re more likely to read about the issue and sign the petition. In case you wanted an update, here’s the latest:
“We attended a Q&A session with GM Mike Maughan last night. We definitely appreciate his time answering questions. When we asked if the tram would be solely for ski patrol, he responded that he could not promise that, since the tram would have to be worth its cost. No cost analysis has been done yet, but he threw out $10million as an example and said the tram would probably be open to skiers as well in order to be worth it. So expecting 150 people per hour at the top of Mt Baldy is a reasonable reality we can expect with this tram.
Another audience member asked, that if the tram indeed gets built, would Alta Ski Area commit to no future development on the peak of Mt. Baldy? Would Alta be willing to commit in writing that it stops with that tram? Mike Maughan said he could not commit to that either, but would be willing to discuss with the owners.
A third person asked what the likelihood is that Alta Ski Area will get sold to Vail or someone else, because if they do (God forbid) come under new owners, they would most likely exploit the tram and expand development on Mt. Baldy even further. Mike Maughan said that he does not think they will sell, but of course he cannot guarantee the future. We appreciate his candid response and he is right—he’s not a fortune teller and we can’t simply hope that the owners of Alta will always have the same ethics and values that they’ve exhibited in the past. This is what we mean by “opening the door to future development”. Currently there are no commitments or safeguards in place protecting Mt Baldy from future development, not from the current or future owners and GMs of Alta.”
