Mt. Everest from Pumori Camp 1

Pumori Camp 1 offers a better view of Everest and its surroundings than Kala Patthar does. I hiked up there one afternoon and got this shot of Everest with the evening alpenglow illuminating its upper flanks. From this vantage point you can see the Northeast Ridge route on the left from just below the Second Step to the summit. On the right you can see the South Col route from the Balcony to the summit. The obvious yellow band of shale begins at over 27,000 feet on this part of Everest.

Great shot!

I love this pic... it is not often one sees Everest from this angle. The peak looks intimidating from here despite the clear skies... and that Yellow Band! The layers are beautifully illuminated in this light. Thanks for the submission.

Thanks! Yes the layers of rock were beautifully illuminated in the afternoon light. This was further enhanced because it had been a low snow year over the previous winter so Mt. Everest was evevn more bare than normal for this time of year.

Wow, you're right. This is a much better view than the one from Kala Pattar or Gokyo Ri. Great photo!

Thanks! The hike to Pumori C1 makes a nice acclimatization day after arriving in Base Camp. Most people do it in the morning but I thought the lighting was better for pictures in the evening.

Thank you. It was a nice clear evening as the clouds cleared away and it made for this awesome view. I feel very fortunate I was able to see it and get this photo.

Cool

I always thought everest has alot of snow on the summit but from this shot it looks as if there is plenty of rock

Thanks! The summit is actually all snow. There is dirt and rock exposed a short distance below. I posted a summit photo. Take a look at that and you'll see all the snow around.
