With Strawberry
Lots of thorny brush and yucca, and even on a 60-ish day the heat radiates up from the ground. There's a summit register now, but unfortunately also a collection of micro-trash. Fun rock scramble near the top!

Via Trail from Red Box
From Strawberry; Sally later. Eyeballed the ridge to Barley Flats which didn't look too bad, but didn't feel like fighting the brush on the old road back. Shadeless summit w/out a register.

Hike Up from Saddle, Down the Steep South Face
If you're into nonsense, head up the steep south face...if you're a practical human being then you'll probably take the well maintained trail from the saddle to the summit and then carefully head down the steep south face.
A group of 8 ascended straight up the south face (835' gain in 0.3 miles, 45% grade). One of the steepest trails I've done, and riddled with yucca plants trying to poke hikers all the way up. Glad we didn't go down that way, although we lost the trail going down the W/NW ridge and had to bushwhack through a poodle dog bush forest for a ways before finding the trail again down to the saddle.

From Red Box with Barley Flats
Direct ascent via S ridge; day after rain so the soil was nicely compacted and made for good steps. Walked N along the ridge to Barley Flats, returning on the Barley Flats trail/ fire road. Very overgrown route, but manageable with patience.
Beautiful!

From Strawberry
Nice hike along the ridge from Strawberry Peak. We came across a large Sierra Club trail crew working on the trail from Red Box to Strawberry Saddle so this area may be opening soon.

Back on the Trail
First hike in almost three months after badly spraining my ankle. Ankle barked a few times on the way down, but held up over all. Nice day, hazy views, but a good hike. Glad to be back.

Up Northwest Ridge / Down the South Ridge
Pleasant hot afternoon hike up, southerly views a little hazy with nice views north. South Ridge descent is a little spicy but fun with plenty of Yuccas willing to skewer you.

Hiked from across the Red Box directly up the south ridge all the way to the summit. 1,300 feet of very steep and loose terrain; 45 minutes to the summit.

Lawlor to Strawberry
Started from Red Box Station. The ridge was steep with a lot of prickly vegetation. Went to summit and headed over to Strawberry. Much different scenery than Death Valley, where I had been a couple days prior to doing these 2.

Colby Canyon to Strawberry to Lawlor, back to Strawberry and back through Colby Canyon. Made for a decent 10 mile 4500 ft. day. Smoking hot.
From Colby Canyon over Strawberry Peak, then Lawlor, and finally Barley Flats -- with Augie (Mountain Impulse) and Travis. This was our farewell hike with Travis as he's moving north to become a member of the Cascade climbing family. Great half day hike!
