old sun route

great shot of merritt, one of the best shots i've seen of the old sun glacier route!

First ascent

Almost 52 years ago, when I was on the trail crew, working in Belly River, I made the first ascent of Natoas. My memory was that except for crossing Old Sun glacier without an iceaxe, it was a tough but not technically challenging scramble, On top exposure on three sides of the peak was daunting. Bill Mathews was with me, he crawled that last 20m on his belly, and never stood up. We made the climb on a Saturday, then walked the 32 km to the trailhead so we could go tell everyone about our feat.
