Mweelrea from the West Side
Took the fairly easy climb from the western side starting in Dadreen where road turns towards Silver Strand. Head up a straight track/ country lane which gradually becomes rougher ground. Initially a mild gradient across open fields becoming steeper as you enter the col heading up to the left side of Mweelrea peak. Early going can be boggy but not too bad during summer months (when we climbed). Weather closed in occassionally at the top though the views on all sides are fairly spectacular. Killary to south, Atlantic and Renvyle to the West/ SW, Mweelrea mountain peaks to north and Delphi valled stretching out to the east. A good climb if you are limited in terms of time but would like a good scalp getting the highest mountain in Connacht.
Route Climbed: Horseshoe Date Climbed: 16th July 2005
Cracking day. Baking hot. Hiked up the bowl on the Louisberg road side then along the plateau. Cloudless day except for a blanket of it on the Atlantic side. One of the best walks in Ireland on a good day.

IsolationNo matter what the weather is, you're guaranteed to have the place to yourself, even if you're climbing and only hiking. Gorgeous on a sunny day.
