Normal Route
I drove to the end of the south road, but couldn't find the trail. On the way up, I saw 2 deer and an ape. Maybe a gorilla or baboon, I don't know the difference. It was big and light brown. The road had a lot of switchbacks, mostly black top but some gravel parts. In a convex mirror at a corner, I saw something move. I thought it was a car, so I slowed down. (I was going slow already - it wasn't a good road.) In the mirror, it looked a little like a person. I had passed some hikers. When I got around the corner, the monkey was standing in the road. It ran up the hill a little way, stopped, and turned around. We looked at each other for a little bit, and then it turned and walked off.
After I got to the end of the road, I walked around a little looking for the trail. It was really foggy/steamy. Like a scary movie - weird fog and weird animals. Then I drove down the mountain and found the trail about half way down - it was marked by a temple gate. Made it up the mountain in 1:15, and down in :45.

Normal route
A well marked trail leads directly to the top - uphill all the way, but worth it for the excellent views of Chuzenji-ko.

First climb I've ever done that starts from a shrine! And a nice one.
