These pinnacles are called the Colored Mounds. The clouds in the background got very large and very close but ultimately passed by. Badlands National Park, SD-- July 2003

Gorgeous.

Can you climb those? Or is it too chalky?

They're really narrow and unstable to boot. The park allows climbing, but it would be pretty sketchy doing anything beyond Class 3 out there. Even Class 3 gets hairy.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to do it. Just curious about it. Hell...just climbing The Chimney Tops in the Smokies gives me the willies.
