Night on Vaganski Vrh

Night on Vaganski Vrh

~ Velebit / South Velebit / Vaganski Vrh ~ Night view towards the E from Vaganski Vrh (1757m), highest peak of Velebit. Right is Golic (1723m). Behind is sea of fog in Lika region. Orange area left of Golic is fog lit from below by strong lights on the Sveti Rok highway exit. Orange area of the left is lit by Gornja Ploca highway exit. By it is summit of Zir, an island peak in Lika, which is barely peering above the thick sea of fog. Further behind is dark massif of Licka Pljesivica. Below it, on the left, are lights of Udbina town. Two distant mountains on the right are Osjecenica (1795m) and Klekovaca (1961m, 90km away) in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

Re: Amazing!

Thanks hiker! Combination of such a crystal night and such situation in Lika won't happen again soon, it was incredible combination and incredible night! What struck me the most is that the light on the TV tower on Biokovo massif, which is 180km away, was visible! I'm so happy with the decision to be on highest peak of Velebit then.

Awesome...

...and stunning. Words fade in front of such beauty captured in a tranquill Velebit night. Wish I was there....

P.S.:

Also I have confirmed that from the summit of Zir Vaganski vrh can be seen. No one believed me when I pointed at the snow-covered peaks of Velebit. :)

Re: Awesome...

Thanks Sinisa!! Vaganski Vrh is visible from Zir, of course, and not only Vaganski Vrh but almost entire arc of continental side of Velebit; from Senjsko Bilo to Tremzina!

Bull over Vaganski Vrh

Nice shot!

That V-shaped grouping of stars is the open star cluster the Hyades--also the face of the constellation Taurus (the bull).

To the upper-left is most of the constellation Auriga, the charioteer. That constellation includes some fine open star cluters--M36, M37, and M38, which may appear on your image as fuzzy stars (the online file is too small to tell).

Of course, Taurus is battling Orion, the hunter. He is just rising below the horizon.

And Orion's mortal enemy is Scorpius, which is on the opposite end of the sky so that they are constantly chasing each other (the body, tail and stinger of Scorpius can be seen in my own image on SP).

The sky has such wonderous tales to tell!

Milk clouds

I have seen this night pict just now, 2 years later. What say more after all these comments. Also me take night pictures but never I have seen before the diffusion of artificial lights a little under the clouds producing this well distinct colours...! Of course there was also the bright moon to help. Is it so Velebit?

Re: Milk clouds

Thanks Claudio! Yes, those orange blotches come from dispersed light on the highway exits, some 250m below the surface of the fog. Moon was full or close to full. This is probably once in a lifetime event because it is not very often, to say the least, that you find yourself on highest peak of Velebit, in the middle of the night and in such conditions! I still feel deep regret of not having better camera than.

Re 2: Milk clouds

I perfectly understand your regret Aleksandar. But also with that limitation, the result is great! You can think at that night with satisfaction. What camera have you used that night? If you continue with this activity and enjoy to doing it, I think you could have other similar magic events, perhaps in other places or mountain and maybe also better than this. Ciao! Claudio
