There have been a growing number of crimes on these slopes - especially violent crimes. The normal route up Acatenango is not safe, even if guided, even with large groups. The only safe route up right now is along a very steep and rugged trail that runs between Acatenango and Fuego. Most of this is privately owned land and you need the owner's permission first.
