John Burroughs, born in Roxbury, NY, was a writer who wrote 23 volumes of essays. Three of them were published posthumously. He spent much of his time on Slide Mountain as well as many other places in the Catskills, where he would study mostly birds and nature, and compose gentle writings based on his observations.

He died on March 29, 1921 while on a train returning from Califonia. He was buried on his 84th birthday on Old Clump Mountain in Roxbury, NY.

There is a plaque in his memory on the top of Slide Mountian.
