Just a little "value add" to your UN 9380 site, in the "Getting There" section:
Getting There
On the Air Force Academy, take the north gate entrance west, then follow it as it goes south, then eventually turns east - your first right is Pine Dr.
I noted it's about 5.5 miles from the guard station at North Gate the Pine Dr.

Nope...the map I had didn't include the road you describe and visibility was ZIPPO. I didn't wear my winter boots and was in 8 inches of snow and had zero visibility...I opted to turn around. I returned home and consulted my Pikes Peak Atlas and raelized I was less than a mile to the summit. Grrr. Oh well, next time.
