Route Climbed: From the PCT Date Climbed: June 2000
I climbed Olancha two years ago. As I was headed down, another party was about to begin its ascent and planned to camp on the summit. Olancha would be a great place to summit camp, especially early in the season when snow is available, because it’s fairly flat and wouldn't be very difficult to climb with a light pack. Not much water in the area, so bring lots of water if you’re hiking later in the season.

Dayhiked Olancha on 10/12/2002. This may have been a bit late in the year to attempt a long hike to Olancha, however the weather was great. Was in the dark (with flashlight) for 2 hours on the way down from the pass. Started a bit late at 7:45am. Last person to sign the summit register was Keith Richards over a month earlier. Even though most of the trail is dusty powder, I was thinking this was a bit easier than Whitney until that last long scramble over the rocks up to the top. Took 7.5 hrs to reach the summit (from Sage Flat) and 4.5 hrs back. Saw only 4 people the entire day (3 of which were hunters). Had a great sunset!
