You should have taken a picture...of the grizzly bear track over your bootprint.
Note that the black bear print is often mistaken for a grizzly bear print. There are differences that are easily identifiable.

Re: You should have taken a pictureI have thought of the picture thing several times but my camera was in my backpack and I was spooked. I had been on Copper Butte earlier in the day and there were all kinds of black bear prints there. This print and a couple on the other side of the trail were much bigger and different. The prints were heading uphill towards Abercrombies summit and the time elapsed between hitting that spot on the trail going up and coming down was about an hour and ten minutes.
I figure I had just missed him by about ten minutes.
