On July 25 2014 while hiking the road to Onyx Peak we saw a Pacific Crest Trail sign and a wooden sign "Onyx Peak 1 mile". We followed it about 1/2 hour and found it descending slightly and nearing the parking area. My friend realized that the PC trail usually skirts summits. A couple coming the opposite direction confirmed that. We turned around but will have to complete the hike on the road to the summit next time.
