Fun with pups
Didn't quite reach the lookout due to the physical limitations of a 9yo moody pitt / retriever mix. Fun day in the mountains, great weather. Snow was still all the way down to the bathrooms at the parking lot, but cleared up on the flats just beyond. Got a little turned around at the creek crossing given snow cover and early season conditions. Attained the ridge and probably within .5mi of the lookout itself. Overall, a fun day : )

Park Butte
Everyone loves a lookout, except maybe the Audubon Society.

Glad I brought snowshoes. Went with Zephyrus and saw Redwic on the trail.

Hmmm, there used to be another Park Butte page somewhere. Oh well. It's been a long time. This was a lovely hike.

Scott Paul Trail loop
I started from the usual trailhead but headed north on the Scott Paul Trail and then west over toward Park Butte. I HIGHLY recommend doing this loop; it adds just 2 or 3 miles (and not too much extra elevation), and you get much more varied scenery -- plus a couple of views of Mt. Shuksan and a funky suspension bridge over muddy Rocky Creek.

Park Butte Superhighway!
With a lot of fresh snow on the trail and peak, and with so-so weather forecasts, I left pre-dawn from the TH and arrived at the lookout shortly after 8:00 AM. To my surprise, five people (plus one dog) had spent the night in there... two pals, one couple, and one dog owner... and not all the same group. This should have been a hint to me as to how popular this destination is. Sure enough, I easily passed 50-60 people during my descent, including EastKing, making this the most popular day-hike I have been on in about 4-5 years! I can only imagine how popular this trail system is during Summer. Highly recommended.
