Route Climbed: Pawnee Pass Date Climbed: September 17, 2005
Great day of hiking. It became very windy once we were nearing Pawnee Pass. Made for a little struggle to the top, but worth it. Beautiful blue skies and views.
Route Climbed: South Slopes - Standard Route Date Climbed: October 09, 2005
Climbed this today with pksander. Nasty rainy day in Boulder, but tons of fresh snow was dumping up there. There was 8" on the ground near the summit by noon with whiteout conditions. Very fun day... winter is finally here :-).
Route Climbed: Pawnee Pass Date Climbed: September 25, 2005
I hiked Pawnee with the Colorado Mountain Club. The day started out foggy and wet down in Denver, but the sky cleared up dramatically once we got up in the mountains and rose above the clouds. The hike itself was great, not too difficult at all, and the weather was gorgeous, though it was very windy at Pawnee Pass. When we arrived at the summit, we could see that the plains were still socked in. Heh. That's what you get for staying down there.
Route Climbed: Pawnee Pass Date Climbed: September 5, 2005
Somewhat windy day, but a beautiful hike. Tundra and some trees changing color: made for some nice scenery. Great views from the summit. Not too crowded, considering it was Labor Day.
Route Climbed: Pawnee Pass Date Climbed: July 31, 2005
Another great summer trip with Frank. Hiked over the pass friday night and camped at Pawnee lake. Saturday we hiked over to Crater Lake and Lone Eagle. Sunday back over the pass and hit the summit of Pawnee peak. Best weather you could ask for, sunny and no wind!
Route Climbed: East Ridge via Little Pawnee Date Climbed: July 2, 2005
Started the day with this ridge ending with Audubon via Crooked Couloir. This is a sweet route with fun route finding and the possibility of increased grade depending on ones choice.
Route Climbed: Pawnee Pass Date Climbed: June 29, 2005
Good lord, I was glad I had my windbreakers today - 50-60 mph winds at Pawnee Pass! So much for combining Shoshoni with Pawnee, but the spectacular view was indeed worth it (when I could stand upright...)
Route Climbed: East Ridge Date Climbed: October 26, 2003
EMS windstopper gloves - $19.99; Fleece face mask to shield the wind - $16; Absolute Solitude in the IPW - Priceless! I saw not a single sole until within a mile of the trailhead on my way back. Many thanks to Kane for his tip on riding a bike in. 35 min ride from gate to TH & about 8 min ride going the other direction! It's also an awesome cardio warm-up before your hike. Just a little over 2 hrs from Long Lake TH to summit (Trip Report forthcoming).
Route Climbed: Toll-Pawnee saddle Date Climbed: August 13
Climbed Pawnee as part of my challenge to cover the whole ridge from Audubon, Paiute, Toll, Pawnee, and Little Pawnee in a day. Was a great trip (see my tripreport for more information). The climb from the Toll-Pawnee saddle was easy. The weather on the summit was great, and I had some good views of Navajo, Dickers Peck, and Apache (one of the next projects). I then continued on along the East Ridge towards Little Pawnee.
On a day that included Mount Toll and Shoshoni Peak, I hiked Pawanee Peak as well. This mountain is probably the easiest (class 1) high mountain to summit in the area. A nice beginner hike wth excellent views.
Route Climbed: Niwot Picnic Area to Pawnee Pass. Date Climbed: July 17, 2004
Wonderful mountains on a dramatic day. Low clouds rolled in from the east filling the valley as we climbed up to the pass. Intermittent breaks let us see the amazing mountains on all sides. Climb from the pass to the peak was straight-forward and the we had the place entirely to ourselves. Thunder threatened, so we beat a hasty retreat instead of continuing into the Blue Lake drainage. Rain and apocalyptic lightning hit just as we dropped below the snowfields below the pass. The same continued most of the way back to the TH. Still, the ascent was very nice!
