Peak Just South of Devils Kitchen

Peak Just South of Devils Kitchen

The highpoint is a short way and easy walk beyond the top of this section. I climbed nearly to the top on both the right and left sides, finding conditions in the Class 4, low Class 5 range. It was within my ability to finish it, but the exposure and gritty sandstone made it risky, so I decided first to look for a better way. I found one off to the left, and it was something like a tough Class 3 or a Class 4 to get up. Notice the small arch near the bottom of the formation. Colorado National Monument, CO-- October 2009

Birthing Hole

This just above Devil's Kitchen, the best area to explore with limited time. In the shaded alcove seen above is the "Birthing Hole". It is a triangle shaped tight squeeze from the top of the cliff. From this view it is a 4-5.0 stiff climb -as you as you wisely backed off- a bit to the left -that you did climb- is tricky but not as committing. The main routes go far left (NE) around the corner from this spot. Two options break in the cliffs to reach the top. Mostly Class 3, maybe a touch of 4 but not overly exposed.

Re: Birthing Hole

Thanks for the information. On my return, I did find an easier way that sounds a lot like your description of the one to the NE as seen here.
