Never been up this drainage before. Saw a porcupine on the way up, right on the trail. Steep grind to gain the ridge. Very mellow scrambling. Nice views up top. Steep, scree skiing on the way down (not sure if I was on route), loads of people hiking up the trail in the morning. 3 hour 7 min car2car.

Traverse from Citadel
Awesome morning traversing from Citadel. 6.5 hours RT
Started from Herman Gulch Trailhead at 6:15 a.m. It was still dark but there was light in the east. We only saw three trail runners coming down as we ascended to Herman Lake. We didn't see anyone else until after we had summited Pettingell. The previous night's weather deposited less than a half inch of snow, but it made the rocks on the south slopes a little slick. We took our time and enjoyed the top all to ourselves. Wonderful fall day with great colors. Finished the round trip in 5.5 hours.

E ridge
not a cloud in the sky all day. a few fresh snow patches form the dusting a few days prior but it should be melted already by now.

South slope
I guess that's what our route is called. We took the ramp up from above the lake.
Skied the Southeast Face with Rachael. Warm day, a bit hot coming up the face with all that sun reflecting. Dropped off the summit just about 10am and snow was softening nicely. Had to carry the last maybe 1/2 mile as the trail was melted out at the bottom, but continuous snow above that point.

east ridge scramble
took the fun, east ridge to pettingell's summit today. more sustained than i expected, and it was loads of fun!
Great views, easy class 3. A bit of exposure at times but nothing big. Two goats on the descent were chattering at each other. T-storms rolled in around 1pm.
From The Citadel to Pettingell, then the most amazing sequence of glissades ever!

East Ridge
The ridge had patches of avoidable snow...and was a blast! Summit had packed snow. Descended South slope. Found areas of snow and ice to, and around, the frozen lake. Patches of ice in trees.

First real snow
About a foot of fresh snow on Hassel Peak and it started to melt when I hiked Pettingel Peak.

Southwest Ridge
Went up the westward leaning ramp above Herman Lake. About halfway up that, I looked at the trail going up what looked like an unpleasantly loose scree slope on Pettingell's south side and decided "I don't think so". Instead, I continued on to a saddle to the left and scrambled up the crest of the southwest ridge; solid rock on that route.

The east ridge was fun. Super quick descent. Meant to also tag 'The Citadel' but weather forced me down. Ok summit. Not the best.

Lot of loose scree, small patch of snow before summit, nice little Sunday hike in Front Range.

Climbed east ridge. I tried to solo that chimney face crack but didn't feel comfortable trying to pull the roof with no rope and a long fall down so I chimneyed back down n went around the south side of it. Then descended south slopes. Great summit all to meself.
