Grandview Peak via City Creek

by Scott » Mon Jul 29, 2013 2:25 am

I haven't climbed Grandview Peak for over two decades and that was from Mueller Park. I was thinking of trying it from City Creek. The information I have dates from 1988 and the SP page doesn't provide much info.

Is it still a bushwhack or are the trails more defined now?

Would you recommend going up Cottonwood Gulch?

Thanks.

I've gone up/down Cottonwood Gulch twice. In early summer it was ok due to some snow and smaller foliage. In late summer it was not so fun with some memorable patches of chest-high nettles. Wouldn't really recommend it, though the Treasure Box mine in lower Cottonwood Gulch is worth poking around at.

The North Fork trail from City Creek to Rudy's Flat is a nice walk. Then the ridge walk over Burro / Big Black to Grandview is very pleasant. I've done Grandview via this route a few times and recommend it. Definitely ride a bike or drive to the trailhead to save some miles. I forget the picnic area number where the trail starts, but it is called "North Fork" and the trail is reasonably easy to find from there.

Another good way to get there is via City Creek Meadows.

I posted this a while ago, perhaps something useful in there:

Thanks for the updated conditions!

We actually climbed Millvue Peak from Lambs Canyon since it was closer to being on the way home and I thought it would be nice to do a mostly north facing route because of the heat. We decided to wait for a cooler day for Grandview.

Speaking of routes to do when it cools off a bit, I had in mind a rim-walk of Red Butte Canyon sometime during the next month or so. Start at the UofU research park, over Big Beacon, then around to Little Black Mtn. Looks like about 16 miles. I was going to do this alone but would be happy for some company.
